In the IT world where agile principles are widely applied we have been measuring velocity scores for years, but in the world of sales I rarely encounter this yet.

What is sales team velocity?

In the Husaca philosophy, "velocity" stands for speed within the sales team. It refers not only to how quickly a lead to deal moves through a sales funnel but also the speed of action and the ability to respond to internal and external factors that positively contribute to acceleration, growth and improvement of the team. It is a key metric that we use to chart the actual performance of a sales team. Simply focusing on only speed in the sales funnel - without aspiring to team velocity - will not lead to optimal results!

The importance of the right sales leadership

Research shows that sales people want genuine recognition for their efforts and leave if they feel undervalued. According to a recent report 79% of sales employees quit their jobs because of "not being valued" by leadership. This is a huge percentage! To put it in perspective, leaving for better working conditions sits at 43% and departure because of dissatisfaction with the bonus scheme sits at 31% according to the Sales Happiness Index.

Why does sales talent leave a company?

For example, by investing in ongoing training programs and coaching sessions, they can improve their skills and you increase engagement, however, research shows that a lack of training or coaching, NOT is the number one reason sales talent leaves a company!

Sales people generally don't quit jobs or businesses, they quit because of their sales manager or boss. This applies to sales professionals of all experience levels, even top performers. They usually quit because there is no connection with their sales manager. Two main reasons they quit are:

Management style: How a sales manager leads the team is crucial! If you are too aloof, people may not feel supported. Or become demotivated if you are too aggressive or pushy and only focus in meetings on what they have scored! How you treat your sales team will directly affect their decision to stay or leave. It's important to strike the right balance and ask the right questions! For example, ask: How can I help you overcome certain obstacles? What can I contribute or do to maximally facilitate you to be successful in your role? Instead of focusing sec on their pipeline and what deals they won.

Micromanagement: Sales professionals absolutely do not like to be "micromanaged. They don't want their boss or supervisor constantly watching them when they don't need to.

So it is very important to stay away from micro-managing and approach sales people with an open management style in which genuine recognition from your person is an important element. In addition, it is crucial to give your sales team autonomy and ownership over their work in order to create the ''team velocity' increase. If you trust them to assess risks, be able to make decisions and lead initiatives, their self-confidence and motivation is going to increase tremendously. In this way, you help them get into flow and they will go the so-called "extra mile" when needed.

In short: Maximizing the speed of the sales team and encouraging talented sales people are two sides of the same coin. By balancing "velocity and empowerment," you can build a long-term, motivated, high-performing "sales talent team" that enables growth and acceleration! And we love that!

The only other tip left: "be patient" - success sometimes takes its time....

By Martijn Spek, May 2, 2024

In the dynamic and competitive world of sales, maximizing the speed of the sales team is crucial to reaping success and staying ahead in the market.

Velocity van het sales team verwijst naar de snelheid waarmee deals door het sales proces gaan.
